Ferrous chloride tetrahydrate is an industrial-grade product with a purity of ≥99%. It is a pale green, odorless crystalline solid. It has a melting point of 105 °C and decomposes when heated to boiling point. At 25 °C, its vapor pressure is negligible, and its relative density is 1.93 at 20 °C. It is highly soluble in water, soluble in tetrahydrofuran (THF), and insoluble in ether. The product is stable under normal ambient conditions, but incompatible with strong oxidizing agents.

Iron(II) chloride tetrahydrate is widely applied as a reducing agent in metallurgy and pharmaceutical manufacturing, and acts as a mordant in dyeing as well as a treatment agent in sewage disposal. It is also specially used for the laboratory synthesis of iron complexes. In wastewater treatment, ferrous chloride functions as both a reducing agent and a flocculant, and is particularly effective for wastewater containing chromate. It serves as a raw material for preparing hydrated iron(III) oxides, which are used as magnetic pigments. Furthermore, it is employed as a reducing agent in a variety of organic synthesis reactions.
