Product Description of CALCIUM PYROPHOSPHATE CAS#7790-76-3
Calcium Pyrophosphate (Ca₂P₂O₇, MW 254.14 g/mol) is prepared by heating dibasic orthophosphate or reacting soluble calcium salt with pyrophosphoric acid. The solid-state route yields amorphous product at 240–500 °C; higher temperatures generate distinct crystal phases: β-phase over 750 °C and α-phase at 1140–1350 °C. The aqueous method obtains its dihydrate Ca₂P₂O₇·2H₂O, a water-insoluble white powder soluble in dilute acids. Anhydrous calcium pyrophosphate decomposes into metaphosphate and calcium oxide at 1353 °C. It is dimorphic, and the high-temperature α-phase transforms back to β-phase around 950 °C upon reheating.

Calcium Pyrophosphate is used in phosphoric acid and fertilizer production. It acts as an acidic ingredient in baking leavening systems and is also applied in processed cheese. Moreover, it finds applications in cell gene transfection and the development of contrast agents.
