2-Methylimidazole appears as a white to light yellow crystalline powder with an amine-like odor. It is highly soluble in polar organic solvents, readily dissolving in water, alcohols, and ketones, while being insoluble in ether and cold benzene. The compound may cause irritation to the skin and mucous membranes. The oral LD₅₀ in mice is 1400 mg/kg.

2-Methylimidazole is a monomethylated imidazole that serves as a key building block for the synthesis of various biologically active compounds. It, along with other imidazole derivatives, can also be used as a catalyst in the refolding of enhanced colored fluorescent proteins. In addition, 2-methylimidazole has been identified as a byproduct of fermentation and can be detected in certain foods as well as in mainstream and sidestream tobacco smoke.
