Ginkgo biloba extract is produced through a multi-step purification process designed to concentrate active ingredients while eliminating toxic ginkgolic acid. The extract contains both polar constituents, including flavonol and flavone glycosides standardized to 24%, and nonpolar constituents such as diterpenes (ginkgolides A, B, C, J, and M), bilobalide (a sesquiterpene), and other minor components standardized to 6% terpenes.

This extract exhibits vasodilatory properties that improve arterial and venous circulation, enhance tissue perfusion, and increase cerebral blood flow. In addition, it decreases capillary permeability and fragility, reduces erythrocyte aggregation, and lowers blood viscosity. These pharmacological effects may be attributed to the inhibition of prostaglandin and thromboxane biosynthesis, regulation of catecholamines, and the strong platelet-activating factor (PAF)–blocking activity of ginkgolide B.
